09.50 – 10.30 Panel Discussion: Using Enterprise Architecture to Meet your Business and IT ObjectivesThere is some way to go before an architectural approach is relevant outside the IT function for many organizations. Involving all stakeholders in an enterprise architecture initiative is an essential objective for all organizations. To be effective and provide value, an architectural approach needs to be relevant to all stakeholders and an integral component of both business decision-making and IT service delivery.

  • In most organizations, why is the enterprise architecture function still the preserve of IT?
  • How can enterprise architecture be an important strategic planning technique that can be used by organizations to communicate and interpret the objectives of the business?
  • An important aspect of successful enterprise architecture is executive buy-in at the highest level. How can this be achieved?
  • Having all the enterprise information available is one thing, but how can organizations make it usable and where can the real value be found?
  • In a properly functioning enterprise architecture, it should provide a link between the business and the technical areas of the organization. What can be put in place to achieve this?

11.00 – 11.30 IBM Presentation: Smarter Computing with Application Portfolio Management: Reduce Cost and Improve Business AgilityMost organizations spend 70-90 percent of funds on keeping lights on, making it difficult to fund projects needed to grow and transform the business. As a cornerstone of Smarter Computing, the IBM Application Portfolio Management (APM) aims at analyzing your operational application portfolio to identify initiatives that will reduce the cost and make breakthroughs in IT productivity, efficiency and innovation. This session walks through a pragmatic approach to APM, how customers have adopted APM, and the results they have achieved.

Presenter: Per Kroll, Chief Solution Architect – Application Portfolio Management, IBM

11.30 – 12.15 Guest Presentation: Making the Business and Benefits Case for an Enterprise Architecture ProgrammePresenter: Dr Tim O’Neill, Professor, University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)
12.15 – 13.30 Lunch and Exhibition
13.30 – 14.00 Guest Keynote Presentation: ‘The Importance of Prioritization and Description to Enterprise Architecture’On one hand, we have the issue that confronts us daily in our lives as Enterprise Architects, which is, where do we start and why do we start there. The seemingly simple notion of prioritization of requirements to drive changes to an Enterprise Architecture seems troublingly difficult. And yet other industries – automotive, manufacturing and so on – do it habitually, and seem to do it rather well.On the other hand, we have the problem of how we describe what we are going to do and how that might meet requirements and drive some changes in the software systems and the organization itself. Indeed, the definition of an architecture used in ANSI/IEEE Std 1471-2000 and adopted by TOGAF is: “the fundamental organization of a system, embodied in its components, their relationships to each other and the environment, and the principles governing its design and evolution”, suggests the importance of such descriptions. So how do we elicit requirements, how do we ensure their alignment to strategic goals, how do we prioritize and how do we turn such things into descriptions of what we want to change and how to change it? In this session we shall look at how we can engage with stakeholder, how we can align and prioritize in a repeatable way and how we can describe change in a way that lends itself to the ANSI and TOGAF definitions.

Presenter:  Professor Steve Ross-Talbot, European Technology Officer, Global Technology Office, Cognizant Technology Solutions Ltd

14.00 – 14.45  IBM WorkshopCome and visit us to see how you can leverage collaborative decision making and enterprise architecture to take back control of your application portfolio (APM)
Using an APM scenario we will demonstrate how you can balance and optimise the needs of the business against IT’s capabilities to deliver improved business quality and agility at reduced cost. We will show you how to:

  • Analyze, assess, and prioritize demand based on business and IT value, improvement potential, and risk
  • Provide a governance process and involve the right people in decision making related to your application portfolio
  • Define the business transformation required and conduct gap analyses supported by visual analysis and reports, including heat maps, to support decisions
  • Assess technical and business impacts of proposed changes
  • Select and plan transformation initiatives that will meet the  business needs
  • Monitor health of portfolio of initiatives and progress against  key initiatives

Presenters:  Per Kroll, Chief Solution Architect – Application Portfolio Management, IBM

Raj Jog, Enterprise Architecture Market Engineer, OSD Ecosystem, IBM

15.15 – 15.45 Ovum Presentation on  Business ArchitectureOrganizations should invest in business architecture to create a more effective link between business and IT planning, to enable better optimization and reuse of business capabilities, and provide a clear strategic context for other enterprise architecture domains and for business change initiatives. This session discusses approaches to business architecture to improve engagement with the organization and its stakeholders.

  • Business architecture provides a linked set of viewpoints that help engagement with the organization and its stakeholders
  • A combination of methods is required to represent the continuum of business architecture views
  • An effective business architecture will create tangible benefits for both business and IT planning
  • Successful business architecture initiatives cannot be run in isolation
